STUNNING OLD WOOD PESTAL AND MORTAR

Small masks were used to validate ownership, identity, and could function as charms to provide protection for an individual or family. This example from the Timor people has a beautifully carved patterning around the perimeter. Its eyes were pierced and mouth were also carved with open negative space. The large projecting headdress depicts that of an antelope. This is common in Indonesian masks, as they almost always depict the heads of animals, which have a particular significance to the myths, cosmology, and traditional lore being projected.
Carved from organic bone, the form and quality of the carving are well executed. This mask is in excellent condition.
