Sugilite, a purple mineral belonging to the milarite group, occurs in the lower manganese orebody at Nchwaning and Wessels Mines, in the Kalahari Manganese Field.
The spectacular colour is from manganese.
Colour may range from light brown yellow, reddish violet, pale lilac pink, magenta, dark rose red, or lavender.
Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 and a specific gravity of 2.75 to 2.80.
Sugilite is a rare purple cyclosilicate mineral that was named after the Japanese petrologist, Ken-ichi Sugi, who first identified it in 1944.
