SUPERB ART DECO "ENGLISH BELL CHINA" 12 PIECE TEA SET WITH BROWN ORANGE TRANSFER PATTERN NUMBER 22276 CALLED BRUSSELS SUPERIOR, MANUFACTURED BY SHORE AND COGGINS LTD OF LONGTON, STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND AND DATING FROM BETWEEN 1930 AND 1936. BELL CHINA WAS A POTTERY MARK OF A STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY CALLED SHORE & COGGINS OF LONGTON.
They traded from 1911 to 1966. BROWN TRANSFER PATTERN FEATURING A CENTRAL PEDASTAL BOWL WITH FRUIT AND ROSES WITH FLORAL ROSE SCROLLS AROUND. THE LEAVES ARE HAND PAINTED IN GREEN WITH SOME BLACK ENAMEL PAINT DOTS TO FRUIT AND PEDASTAL BASE.
THERE IS A RARITY AND NOVELTY VALUE TO SHORE & COGGINS WARES (APART FROM HAVING A FANTASTIC SOUNDING ENGLISH NAME!). THEY DIDN'T PRODUCE FOR THAT LONG AND REPRESENT A KIND OF 'GLORY DAYS' IN UK STAFFORDSHIRE POTTING WHERE THE MARKET WAS SO STRONG SMALLER FAMILY RUN FIRMS COULD CARVE OUT A NICHE FOR THEMSELVES AND HOLD OFF THE GIANTS.

MARK: MARK USED BETWEEN 1930 AND 1966 BRUSSELS SUPERIOR ABOVE BELL LOGO BELL CHINA FINE CHINA ENGLAND The 'Bell China' trade name was used from c.1911 until the closure of the Edensor Works in 1966. The name or initials of Shore & Coggins do not appear on the marks after the mid 1930's
SHORE & COGGINS LTD BELL CHINA (1887 - 1966): Shore & Coggins dates back to 1887 when it was known as J Shore & Co. In 1905 a new partnership was formed with Shore, Coggins & Holt this partnership survived 5 years until 1910 when John William Holt left and Shore & Coggins Limited was formed. In 1918 William Coggins died and John Shore (the founder) sold the business to Thomas C Wild & Sons. The Wild group expanded the business and introduced the 'Bell China' trade name. 'Queen Anne' and 'Princess Anne' was also trade names that were introduced after the Second World War. In 1966 there was reorganisation of the Wild subsidiary companies which included the closure of the works of Chapmans (Longton) Ltd and Shore & Coggins Ltd.
