Michael Baraitser and Anton Obholzer are co-authors of Cape Country Furniture, Town Furniture of the Cape, and with Willem Malherbe, The Cape House and its Interior. Their continued interest in Cape Antique furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries has led to this monumental work, covering all aspects of both town and country furniture, including many new additions. It is an indispensable source of reference and it is the most comprehensive book on the subject to date. Although many of the pieces were viewed in museums, the vast majority of the country furniture was examined by the authors on farms in the eastern and western Cape provinces, where it was still in use, or stored in lofts. there are chapters on the dating of Cape Furniture, the woods used and information about regional differences. Nearly 2 000 photographs in black and white and more than 50 in colour are included in this standard work on the subject.
