A magnificent full-sized vintage Nepalese gurkha kukri. The kukri (or kukhuri) is a type of short sword with a distinct recurve in its blade that originated in the Indian subcontinent. It is is the national weapon of Nepal, traditionally serving the role of a basic utility knife for the Nepali-speaking Gurkhas, and consequently is a characteristic weapon of the Nepali Army. There are many myths surrounding the kukri since its earliest recorded use in the 7th century most notably a traditional custom that the blade must draw blood before being sheathed, owing to its sole purpose as a fighting weapon.
This fine example has a bone handle inlaid with brass decoration. The heavy high quality steel blade is intricately engraved on both sides with traditional scenes depicting dragons and elephants (elephants are revered in Nepal and other Hindu cultures as a symbol of good luck, fortune, and protection).
The original leather on wood sheath (DAP) is decorated with various traditional Nepali symbols. The set includes the chakmak (sharpening knife) and charda (small knife). These are also bone-handled. Kindly note that they are somewhat worn but functional. The kukri and sheath are in good vintage condition. This is both a work of art and a fully functional weapon.
Size: The kukri is 37 cm in length with the blade measuring 25.5 cm. The ang (chest) which is the widest part of the blade measures 6 cm across. The bitheu (blade spine) measures 8 mm thick! A heavy, solid piece.
