Superb Old 'Shona Bakatwa' African Dagger & Sheath
This wonderful, authentic, early dagger with sheath, of the 'Shona' people from Zimbabwe (formally Rhodesia), is known as a 'Bakatwa', and probably dates to around the 1920/30's. The hilt and sheath are hand carved out of a lovely two tone, hard wood, with the hilt being beautifully bound and braided with copper wire in three places, and the sheath being made from two pieces of wood, which are bound together and braided in four places. It has a lovely hand forged double-edged blade, with parallel edges, with the last 8cm tapering to a point, and one half decorated with black patina. This superb dagger and sheath are in great condition for their age, and the blade appears to be in original condition, free of pitting or rust. The lovely copper wirework is nice and tight with a super patina, and no sign of unravelling.
The dagger and sheath measures 48cm x 4cm, the blade measures 29,7cm x 3cm, and the hilt 15cm x 4cm, and together weigh 430g.
Note: The 'Bakatwa' is a double-edged sword or dagger used in traditional Shona religious ceremonies.
