Ruby, the red variety of corundum, is the most expensive gemstone after diamonds. The distinctive rubies of "pigeons blood" colour from Burma, especially from the Mogok mines, have the highest value. Spicemens over 5 ct, as well as eye clean stones, are very rare. Due to the trade embargo against Burma export of rubies from this country has virtually stopped and prices of Burmese rubies of higher quality are now even exceeding those of diamonds on the London market.
