Superstars V8 Next Challenge (PS3) Review

🏁 Gameplay & Mechanics

Superstars V8 Next Challenge is the follow-up to Superstars V8 Racing, and it leans into realism with a focus on the official Superstars touring car series. This is not your average arcade racerits built for fans of professional circuit racing who prefer tuning over turbo boosts.

Handling is more refined than its predecessor, offering a decent balance between simulation and accessibility. Cars feel weighty and grounded, with braking points and throttle control making a real difference in lap times. That said, the handling can still feel stiff at times, and the learning curve might deter casual players.

The AI has improved slightly, though its still prone to occasional erratic behavioreither too passive or aggressively ramming in corners. Vehicle damage is present but limited to visual and performance impairments, lacking the depth seen in other sim racers of the era.

🎮 Modes & Features

Theres a solid selection of content for a mid-tier racer. Players can jump into:

  • Quick Race

  • Championship Mode

  • Time Attack

  • Online Multiplayer (now inactive on PS3)

The game features real-world circuits and licensed Superstars drivers and teams, which will please fans of the niche series. Customization options are slim, but car setup tweaking (gear ratios, suspension, brakes) is available and useful for performance-focused players.

However, track variety is somewhat limited, and theres little progression or reward system to keep you engaged long-term. Career mode is notably absent, which hurts replay value.

🎨 Graphics & Presentation

Visually, the game is clean but unremarkable. Car models are detailed enough to convey brand realism, and lighting effects are decent for its generation. However, tracks look static and lack atmosphere. Spectator stands feel lifeless, and environments outside the track are minimalistic.

The HUD is clear and functional, with speed, gear, and damage indicators all easy to read. Menus are serviceable but basic.

🔊 Sound & Commentary

Sound design is passableengine notes are throaty and varied across different car manufacturers, but lack the dynamic range and intensity found in top-tier racing games. Tire screeches, collisions, and environmental sounds are flat, and theres no commentary or in-race chatter to elevate the atmosphere.

Music is limited mostly to menus, and it's generic racing fareneither distracting nor memorable.

Pros

  • Realistic driving physics (leaning toward sim-lite)

  • Official Superstars license with real drivers and teams

  • Tuning options offer a strategic edge

  • Competent AI (with some hiccups)

  • Reasonably challenging for skilled racers

Cons

  • No career or story mode

  • Bland presentation and lifeless tracks

  • Limited replay value without strong progression systems

  • Stiff car handling for casual players

  • Minimal visual upgrades over its predecessor

🏁 Final Verdict

Superstars V8 Next Challenge isnt a bad gameits just a modest one. It offers solid sim-style racing with official licenses, and enough depth for motorsport enthusiasts to tinker with setups and chase lap times. However, its also lacking the polish, depth, and presentation flair needed to stand out in a crowded genre.

Score: 6.5 / 10 A functional, competent racer with sim aspirationsbut limited appeal beyond dedicated racing fans. Recommended for collectors or enthusiasts of touring car series, but others may find it too dry.
