1967 first edition hardcover with dust jacket and 255 pages in good condition. Name in ink in front.
This is New Zealand born and educated Surgeon, Campbell Beggs book about his gruelling wartime experience in the area which is now Iraq. It was originally written in 1919 immediately following his demobillization from the army - but was not published for another 40 odd years.
Campbell Begg's experiences were in the same area that much of the current Iraq war is being fought in. Hemmed in by hostile Arabs on one side and the Turkish Army on the other. A whole division of the British army found itself marooned on a narrow strip of land six miles long and 2 wide in the Tigris Marsh.
Campbell Begg's real ability is that he brings the whole situation alive in startling detail. Everything from the insects and food to the people. This is not really a discussion point by point of the campaign, but rather it is a personal memoir of life in the war.
