Susan Mitchinson, Woodcut, "Wanting to be together".

Signed woodcut by one of Namibia's Masters, Susan Mitchinson (1953 - 2014). The woodcut 6/20, measures (410 x 570), and is called "Wanting to be together". The piece is glass framed (730 x 900).

Susan Mitchinson was born and raised in Newcastle-on-Tyne in England. Beauty is a thing of hope, she says, and this phrase symbolizes her work. She is fascinated by Romanticism, especially as illustrated by the individual and its relationship with the classes.

Originally a student of literature and bound for the teaching profession, her career path made an abrupt turn "when I realized you only have one life to do what you want". But literature still very much affects her work, as well as experiences and changing environments. "Since I have been in Africa, my work has become much stronger and everything is more positive and solid. My style has gone from something expressionistic to something more spiritual."

For this dynamic and outspoken artist, freedom of movement, expression, choice and association are prime requisites in life. Through her intense experiencing of the world, these are fused into her memory and gouged into the patient grain of her wood blocks. "It's like sculpturing in the way that you become part of that piece of art", she says.
