Jay Johnson is the most successful contemporary folk art dealer in America and author of 'American Folk Art of the Twentieth Century' (Rizzoli, $45). He has pioneered the way for other dealers who have sprung up in Boston, New Orleans, Chicago, Philadelphia, Santa Fe, and other cities. Folk paintings and sculpture bring as little as a few hundred dollars to as much as $10,000 to $25,000.

Folk art is beginning to appear in museum collections and an exhibition titled 'American Folk Art, Expressions of a New Spirit' toured major European cities last year and will begin an American tour May 3 at the Phoenix (Ariz.) Art Museum. It is sponsored by New York's Museum of American Folk Art, which recently expanded its own collection of 18th and 19th century art to include the 20th.
