This item is an original SWATF Engineers beret flash, commonly referred to as a balkie. These bars were worn on the beret beneath the unit badge to indicate the wearers corps within the South-West Africa Territorial Force, which operated during the South African Border War.
The enamel bar features the recognised colour pattern used by the Engineers, one of the technical and support arms within the SWATF structure. Items from this period remain highly sought after by collectors of Southern African militaria due to their historical context and limited availability.
The reverse includes the standard pin fittings used for beret attachment.
