Sweet Basil "Dark Opal" Seeds - Ocimum basilicum ~ Herbs

Ocimum basilicum Dark Opal is a highly ornamental Basil with dark purple foliage. It has beautiful lilac flowers with dark red stems and is spectacular as a garnish or in salads. Dark opal basil is a cultivar of Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil), developed by the University of Connecticut and Joseph Lent in the 1950s. With deep purple, sometimes mottled leaves, it is grown as much for its decorative appeal as for its culinary & medicinal value.

This basil has a strong flavour, so use it sparingly. Basil plants repel white fly and aids in keeping the garden pest free when planted along with tomatoes. It should not be grown near to rue.

It reputed as being an aphrodisiac as well as a sedative. To ease tension or headaches a tea can be taken orally. Take a mug and add a quarter cup of fresh leaves. Then pour one cup of boiling water over the leaves and let it stand for five minutes, strain abd drink. It is an excellent detoxifier when eaten fresh and is even said to help cure hangovers!

Use with tomato dishes, in soups, salads and meat, add to brinjals, squash dishes, cucumber and salads. Excellent in pasta dishes and on pizzas.
