The sequel to Steinbeck's 1945 classic Cannery Row.

This novel continues the story of marine biologist Doc and his friends and introduces several new characters along the way. Doc returns home from service in the Second World War to find his hometown of Monterey, California, very changed. The canneries have all closed because of a sharp decrease in local sea life. Lee Chong, who owned the general store, sold his business to a shady entrepreneur and left town. The local brothel has been taken over by Fauna, whose sole intent is not to make money but to make her girls respectable and marry them off.

First published 1954 by William Heinemann, London. Condition: Fair to good. Paste-downs and flyleaves stained, otherwise internally clean. Previous owner's name in front. Very worn dust jacket pasted on new cover.
