Unique Qualities:
Growing Season: Sweet Pea Bijou thrives when planted in autumn or early spring, preferring full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Regular deadheading encourages prolonged blooming.
Time to Harvest: Flowers begin appearing 80-90 days after planting, continuing to bloom throughout spring and summer.
Bijou stays short, less than 0.5m unlike both mammoth and ' old spice which exceed 1.5m. This dwarf nature makes it easier to manage since it wont require as much time spent staking, also suitable for verandah borders. However as a sweetpea (which requires tons of sunlight) being shorter means that it has to be grown at the front of borders in full sun spots , since in the small gardens typical of most of South africa, walls and buildings cast shadows and the way to deal with shadow is to grow taller plants. As the sun moves across the sky, taller plants can reach past the shadow zone, while short plants just get shaded.
