Gideon Scheepers, a 23 year old Boer fighter, was executed by British firing squad next to an empty grave only months before the Anglo-Boer War came to an end. The body was exhumed and reburied in an unknown grave to prevent his commando from recovering it. Failing to adhere to the Geneva Convention in respect of prisoners of war his death caused an outcry and the way in which it was carried out ensured a martyr's status for him thereafter.
