The SX 460 is a half wave phase controlled thyristor type automatic voltage regulator. A thyristor is a solid state semiconductor device. It acts as a bi- stable switch which conducts when the gate receives a current trigger. It continues to conduct while the voltage across the device is not reversed. The unit forms part of the excitation system for a brushless generator. As well as regulating the generator voltage the AVR circuitry includes under speed and sensing loss protection features. Excitation power is derived directly from the generator terminals. All automatic voltage regulators are designed to protect equipment by monitoring and adjusting the output voltage of a generator. They have many capabilities such as surge suppression, short circuit protection and line noise reduction. They also balance phase to phase voltage and ensure the stability of the generator.
The automatic voltage regulator is linked with the main stator windings and the exciter field windings to provide closed loop control of the output voltage. In addition to being powered from the main stator the unit also derives a sample voltage from the output windings for voltage control purposes. As the unit checks the voltage samples it refers it to the set point which has been set by the operator. As soon as there is a difference between the set point and the sample voltage it sends a signal to the exciter field to increase r decrease power to keep the generator within the parameters that have been marked.
