"Coralberry"
Coralberry
is a dense bushy deciduous shrub native to the eastern U.S. Soft downy
foliage makes an attractive leaf pattern growing 3 to 4 ft. tall and
spreading. Flowers are tiny, not real showy but the unusual
purplish-pink berries are eye catching. Thrives with part shade and
moisture, but NOT deep shade.

Although the fruit is edible it is rarely eaten. It is likely to
contain saponins which are toxic at high levels, but can be removed by
cooking. A decoction of the inner bark or leaves has been used as a wash
in the treatment of inflamed or sore eyes. A cold decoction of the
root bark has also been used as an eye wash to treat sore eyes.

Plants can be grown as a hedge and they are very tolerant of
trimming. They have an extensive root system and also spread through
suckering. They can be used for soil stabilization.
