My Description (From previous owner and other

T.J. & J MAYER DALE HALL POTTERY LONGPORT PARIAN JUG 1850s "Paul et Virginie"

THIS HANDSOME, MID-VICTORIAN PERIOD GLAZED ENGLISH HIGH RELIEF STONEWARE PITCHER HAS A DETAILED CHOCOLATE BROWN STIPPLED GROUND ON WHICH IS LAID VERY THICK ALLEGORIAL SCENES OF THE YOUNG COUPLE, PAUL ET VIRGINIE, ON A TROPICAL SETTING WITH PALM TREES, ON ONE SIDE THE GIRL IS SEATED AND THE BOY STAND, ON THE OTHER, THE BOY CARRIES THE GIRL. THE HAND-CARVED DETAIL IS STUNNING AND EVEN THE HANDLE IS DECORATED WITH FRONDS AND A STALK. IT HAS A HINGED LID MADE OF PEWTER THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE JUG WHICH WAS AN OPTION ON THESE JUGS.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION COMES FROM R.K. HENRYWOOD, 'RELIEF-MOULDED JUGS 1820-1900.

"The two scenes are inspired by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de St Pierre's novel 'Paul et Virginie', set on the island of Mauritius. The tropical paradise in which the two children have grown up is shattered when Virginie is forced to travel to France; she dies in a shipwreck on her return while Paul tries in vain to swim out to her. The jug depicts a moment in the story before the separation when the two adolescents lose their way on a remote part of the island and are confronted by a great river which Paul helps Virginie to cross. The subject was sculpted by Carpeaux and Prosper--d 'in France, and a popular subject for Parian porcelain in England.
