Condition: Fine ….. Pen & Ink on ……… paper. A little foxing around the outside edges of the cartoon drawing. Actual drawing is clear, clean and bright. Dimensions: Length 18 cm Width 17.5 cm. Also on the back a pencil sketch of 3 male characters.

Thomas Ochse Honiball (1905-1990) was a celebrated South African cartoon artist. T.O. Honiball (as he was commonly referred to) was born on 7 December, 1905 in Cradock, Eastern Cape, & . he attended the Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch and did drawings for the school magazine; grew up in Stellenbosch, South Africa. He originally studied architecture at the University of Cape Town. However, he needed a less structured way to express his artistic capabilities and from 1927 to 1930 he lived in Chicago where he studied commercial art. During this period he was introduced to American cartoons.
Returned to South Africa in 1930, to work for Napier Advertising in Cape Town for a few years. Then became a freelance illustrator and cartoonist for Die Burger and Die Huisgenoot till 1974. He succeeded D. C. Boonzaaier as the political cartoonist for the daily newspaper Die Burger.s
Creator of the now famous allegorical series called Oom Kaspaas (1939-1957for \naspers group and later in Landbouweekblad1975-1982 and Adoons-hulle (1948-1971 in Die Huisgenoot) 1948-1968, in which the main characters are a community of baboons. Also did a series on Jakkals en Wolf ("Jackall and Wolf"), classic childrens stories in Die Jongspan (1942-1969). Some of these series were also dramatised for stage and TV over the years. **. Designed programmes inter alia for Hendrik Hanekom's company, among them for Die Stille Haard and Die Verliefde Spook. Thomas Ochse Honiball is known as the founder of the South-African comic strip.
Honiball's comics were very popular, and were also published in books and adapted for radio and TV. Honiball continued to work as a political cartoonist until 1978 and then retired. Written in South-African language, Honiball's work stood out for its humanity and its satirical comments on the South-African society.
