I was given this book when I was 9 and reread it many times. The stories as much as the artwork just filled me with wonderment and gave me so many fantastical daydreams about the world. I am 37 now and glad of having had those stories at so young an age.
The artwork is as much of a storytelling device as the words. The Kincaid's clearly worked very closely on these books ( Eric Illustrates, Lucy writes I believe ) so the artwork perfectly compliments the story. The artwork surrounds the words, its not the case, like with many children's books, where the the scene artwork comes a couple of pages too early or too late.
I've been reading and sharing the book with my daughters from before they could read, now one of them is 8 and can delight in reading them herself. Modern children's books are so often advertisements for disney films or the folklore is watered down until its saccharin. Not so with this one, they are charming folklore stories that are witty, humorous and occasionally spooky but always they are filled with magic.
One of the best things about the stories is that they ARE written for kids, there's no sense of an author desperate to widen the word base for their own enjoyment, its always about the kids and the use of words that young ages can understand.
There's this strange twilight zone in children's stories that exists between the ages of 6-11 where its very hard to find something that isn't throwing too many big words around and isn't oversimplifying bigger ideas. This book effortlessly provides for this age group. I can't recommend it enough.
Slight surface scratching and buffing on cover. Small hole on spine. Traces of glue of price tag on first page. Rest of this large hard cover book is in very good condition! Pages neat and clean and binding tight.
