Talk to Archbishop Tutu about Peace and Politics

Desmond Mpilo Tutu , born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, entered the Anglican ministry after teaching in a High School for three years. He was ordained in 1961. This dynamic ‘rabble rouser for peace” has served in a number of increasingly prominent positions. His position as the General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches, established him as a national and international figure.

His extraordinary contributions towards the crusade for justice and racial reconciliation in South Africa earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. Two years later, he was made Archbishop of Cape Town, and he became the principal mediator and conciliator in the transition from Apartheid to democracy. In December 1995, former President Nelson Mandela appointed Archbishop Tutu as Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This dynamic human rights ‘activist’, and his role with the Commission, was a crucial component in the reconciliation process in South Africa.

Today Archbishop Tutu is regarded as a world statesman whose humility, passion and dedication for truth, reconciliation, and human rights make him a leading moral voice.
