History
No recent gemstone discovery has had more of an impact on the world gemstone market than tanzanite. Portuguese prospector Manuel
d'Souza discovered this gem in Tanzania in 1967 while searching for sapphire. Tanzanite was named after its country of origin by
Henry Platt, vice president of Tiffany & Co. in New York, one of the world's most famous jewelers who began a marketing campaign
to introduce tanzanite to the public in the 1980s.
Tanzanite has rapidly become the most desired colored gem in the United States. High demand and very limited supply has caused
prices to take dramatic leaps over the last two years. Color is what has caused women to be mesmerized by this gem. The finest
gems have a vivid blue to violet color which is significantly influenced by the ambient light. Daylight will cause this gem to
show blue and incandescent light will bring out the violet color. The future of this gem can be predicted; greater demand and
high prices. How high can prices go? The most expensive colored gem is alexandrite which can reach $15,000/ carat. Tanzanite
is a more desirable color and demand is many thousands of times greater. If this 4 square kilometer mining area in Tanzania
quits producing, prices of $3000.00 per carat are very likely and possibly will go higher. This is the Gem of the Millennium.
Tanzanite is now considered one of December's Birthstones.
