If you’re a subscriber to the belief that size counts, and bigger is always better then you’ve definitely come to the right listing. Today, I’m pleased to offer a framed velour-type tapestry of truly monolithic proportions. At nearly 2 metres wide, this is a VERY substantial piece. Obviously the listing photo limits cannot do it justice – please email me for more photographs if you’d like to see the piece in greater detail.
Actual dimensions on the frame are; 191cm wide from edge to edge, and 78cm high. The tapestry panel within the frame measures 176cm wide by 65cm high. Structurally, the frame is very sound. Hung, the piece is suspended by two chains, one on either side of the back of the frame. Chains and anchor points on frame are also sound.
The frame is old gold in colour, with some pleasant ornate features. The tapestry itself has been woven in muted, autumnal hues. Although it is a large piece, it’s surprisingly unobtrusive, until it does draw your eye, and you get caught up in the enormous detail of this period, domestic scene.
Between the clean lines of the rafters of the room, and the chess-board flag-stoned floor, can be seen 3 female figures, and one male – one lady standing, engaged in conversation with the father figure, one lady seated intent upon her needle-point, and the third, a young girl playing with a hoop. Around them, the trappings and features of daily life; lace draped table with ewer and goblet, ornate fireplace, clock, hall chair, paintings – all illuminated by the light streaming from a series of large, cottage-paned windows. Beyond an open door in the room, one can glimpse what appears to be a courtyard, counterpointed by a marble arch that looks onto an upward leading staircase into the interior of the house.
Consistent with the age of this piece, there has been some wear; the decorative beading adorning the innermost channel of the frame, has broken away in places. It would not detract measurably from the piece, were this beading to be removed in its entirety. A few isolated areas of the tapestry material itself are also a little worn, but no significant detail has been lost.
Ultimately this piece needs to find rest in a room that can absorb its proportions – perhaps even gracing the walls of a restaurant, or country house.
The dimensions and weight of this piece will probably make normal postage impractical, but I can explore this further if requested. If the buyer lives within reasonable driving distance from Durban, I will be happy to deliver for a nominal fee, to be agreed at conclusion of sale with the winning bidder. If the buyer lives beyond these environs, they will have to make their own arrangements for collection. I will assist by packing/wrapping the item, and being available for the collection thereof.
