Tate Liverpool original opening announcement poster (colour)1988

Framed under Glass Fabulous

Own a little piece of Tate history with this original vintage poster announcing the opening of Tate Liverpool in 1988. The landscape poster features a coloured architectural graphic of the view of the iconic gallery seen from the front, across the dock.

Tate Liverpool was Tates second site, when then director Alan Bowness decided to create a Tate of the North. The gallery was designed to have a distinct identity, dedicated to modern art and encouraging a new, younger audience through an active education programme. It is housed in a warehouse at Albert Dock, and designed by James Stirling. His designs left the exterior of the brick and stone building almost untouched, and transformed the interior into simple, elegant galleries. Tate Liverpool opened to the public in May 1988.

The text on the poster reads:

TATE GALLERY LIVERPOOL

A gallery for modern art in Albert Dock Liverpool opening in Summer 1988

Conversion by James Stirling, Michael Wilford and Associates for the Trustees of the Tate Gallery

with funds from Merseyside Development Corporation, the Office of Arts and Libraries and generous corporate and private patrons

Dimensions: 59.5 x 85 cm
