During cooking, it regulates the pressure that is created inside the pot, and when necessary, lets the excess steam out using the spring system. If the operating valve fails, its role is automatically taken over by the safety valve. Using an additional spring system, it will start letting the excess steam out itself. In the case that both valves fail (which is very unlikely, though), the pressure in the pot will push out the lid seal and the excess steam will start to escape through the opening between the lid and the pot. In addition, Tefal has also ensured maximum safety of the cook when handling the pressure cooker. Using a patented system, the pot can be opened and closed very simply with one hand. Once the pressure rises, however, you can no longer open it. It also works the other way round: If the lid is not fitted properly and the pot is not securely closed, it will not get pressurized. Another safety feature is the system at the handle. In case someone flipped the cooker's handle into the vertical position, i.e. tried to open the pot, they would fail in the case that the pot was still under pressure.
