A long-standing desire to travel led the author, at the age of fifty, to take a bicycle ride from his hometown of Manchester, England, to the country of his birth, South Africa. On his eight-thousand-mile journey through Europe and Africa, he got robbed, arrested, attacked and got lost. This is an account not just of that journey, but also of the people he met and the impressions he formed of Africa. In particular, it is an attempt to understand why the continent is in such a mess, and why travel can sometimes be a huge disappointment. The book, despite its title, is not about football. The title is a reference to Pele's prediction that an African team will win the World Cup, why he made that prediction, and why the author no longer subscribes to it.
