¿"Tohono O'odham"
Thisnative to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico has been grown sincepre-Columbian times. It is more drought-resistant than the common bean(Phaseolusvulgaris)and is grown in desert and arid regions from Arizona through Mexicoto Costa Rica. The water requirements are low and the crop will growin areas where annual rainfall is less than 16 inches.TohonoO¿odham beans grow into willowy or lanky bushes and produce drybeans in 80 to 100 days.

Thename tepary is thought to be derived from the Tohono O'odhamphrase ¿t'pawi¿ or "It's a bean."

Teparybeans are cooked like other dry beans after soaking. Some NativeAmericans would toast the dry beans, then grind them into a mealwhich was mixed with water before eating.
