Original hardcover. Brownish boards with gilt lettering to front and spine. Published in 1884 by James Nisbet & Co., London with 211 pages. Binding visible between front board and end page, as well as between back board and last end page. No loose pages. Pages 106 and 107 were probably not cut and were rather crudely separated. See photographs for more info on this. On the first title page are three signatures. Rest of book is clean. End pages tanned. Included is a letter with the publishers' address, dated 1884, with a request about a review. In a different handwriting is amongst others the written name of the author. Whether it was written by Henry Varley, I do not know. The book is a collection of essays on topics that were relevant at the time, including politics, social issues and religion. A 141 year old gem. No shipping overseas.
