A few weeks ago I posted this comment about an intriguing “17th S&Co” coin… namely an older, flatter variety of the set four “In Goods” 6d…

See: http://forum.bidorbuy.co.za/coins-notes-numismatist/12982-intriguing-strachan-set-four-6d.html

As far as I can tell no one else has this very unusual older piece. I have about four of them – the only examples I found while counting and categorizing over 20,000 coins back in 1978.

The pair of set four 6d for sale here include the newer (common) piece in near Unc and toned condition and the older (extremely rare) variety which is impossible to find in nice condition.

Although the same dies appear to have been used the flatter detail of the older coin and the larger punch hole in the newer coin suggest that they were struck at different times. The alloy of the coin also appears to be different in the two varieties.
