The 1939 - 1945 Star was awarded to those who served in the Second World War between 03rd September 1939 and 02nd September 1945. In order to qualify for this medal the recipients had to have served six months in an active operational area, although this time frame was reduced to two months for the RAF Aircrew. Time spent in POW camps was counted towards the qualfication periods and members of the armed forces whose time had been cut short due to death, wounds or sickness would automatically qualify for this award as well as those who had other awards or decorations.
This award is a 6 pointed star which contains the GRIVI cypher on it and surrounded by a circlet which contains the phrase "The 1939 - 1945 Star". The circlet also contains a crown at the top.
