The Acme two tone whistle - Made in England
During the first half of the 20th century, it was normal practice for hotel doormen to hail passing cabs for their patrons. The loud and melodic duo-tone of the ACME Two-tone Taxi Whistle would comfortably carry across loud city traffic noise, and instead of contributing to the din, brought a gentler, somewhat softer sound into the mix. Reminiscent of old stream trains way off in the distance, one long blow usually sends canine ears skyward.
First used for attracting horse-drawn hansom cabs, then for the automobile taxis that replaced them, the distinctive call of this unique two-tone Taxi Whistle was known in cities across the US. A doorman could hail a cab without offending the ears of the gentleman or lady for whom the cab was being summoned. We think it’s a beautifully designed item that would look just as great on a mantelpiece as in your pocket waiting for the next chance to sing.
The ACME Whistle Company is the oldest English whistle company still in existence. Founded in 1884 by Joseph Hudson, they have produced some of the most recognizable sounds of the past 135 years.
