Condition : Good. Published circa 1949-1950s for the Heirloom Library collection, undated, Hardback, no Dustjacket - Children's Books - 286 pp. 8 brightly-coloured plates plus b/w drawings.
All the "muchness" of Wonderland captured in one book! This edition contains the texts of both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking Glass.
Carroll's unique play on logic has undoubtedly led to its lasting appeal to adults, while remaining one of the most beloved children's tales of all time.
Meanwhile, however, these apparently simple stories have become recognised as adult masterpieces, and extraordinary experiments, years ahead of their time, in Modernism and Surrealism.
This rare edition of Alice in Wonderland is profusely illustrated by the English artist Philip Gough (1908-1986), who provides 8 colour plates plus 23 line drawings, somewhat in the style of Rex Whistler. Gough was born in Lancashire, and studied at the Liverpool School of Art and Chelsea School of Art, London, originally training as a stage designer. He shared Whistler's stylistic interest in the Regency period, and is particularly known for his dust-jacket designs for novelist Georgette Heyer's series of Regency romances.
