"The Battle of Majuba Hill was fought between 365 British soldiers and an almost equal number of Transvaal burghers on a Sunday morning in 1881. By the next day this remote hill in South Africa had become famous throughout the world. For the battle was at once recognised to be the most humiliating defeat ever inflicted on British arms; only later was it identified as the Bunker Hill of Afrikanerdom and the touchstone of an exuberant nation's life. Today, although it was fought less than a long lifetime ago, and its last survivor has only recently died, this battle has already taen on the aura of a legend."
