The Battle of Spion Kop Oliver Ransford
Spion Kop was the scene of the bitterest fighting of the Anglo-Boer war of 1899- 1902. On its summit was fought the climactic battle of Sir Redvers Bullers campaign to relieve Ladysmith, a campaign which has been stigmatised by a distinguished commentator as `a display of supreme military incapacity that will find its permanent place in history.
Dr Ransfords research into the personalities of Buller, Warren, Botha and Prinsloo, his familiarity with the country round Spion Kop and his extensive use of Boer records, have enabled him to recreate and analyse the campaign in a remarkably lucid manner without losing any sense of its predominant confusion.
