THE BERLIN BUNKER
by James P. ODonnell
Eyre Methuen, London.

About the Book
The Berlin Bunker is journalist James P. ODonnells definitive account of the final days of Adolf Hitler and the collapse of the Third Reich, as witnessed from within the Führerbunker itself. Based on extensive postwar interviews with surviving members of Hitlers inner circle including secretaries, guards, and generals ODonnell reconstructs with chilling precision the claustrophobic descent into delusion, loyalty, and death beneath the ruined streets of Berlin in April 1945.

What emerges is not myth or melodrama, but a disciplined work of reportage: a psychological anatomy of power and madness at its terminus. From the futile military briefings to the eerie calm of Eva Braun, from Goebbels fanaticism to the ordinary human terror of the bunker staff, ODonnells narrative stands as one of the most credible and unnerving historical testaments of the twentieth century.

As critic Theodore H. White observed: Quite simply the most accurate and terrifying account of the nightmare and its end I have ever read.

About the Author
James P. ODonnell (19171990) was an American journalist and foreign correspondent for Newsweek. Stationed in postwar Berlin, he gained unprecedented access to the sealed Chancellery bunker, interviewing eyewitnesses before their stories were dispersed or suppressed. His work remains a foundational text for historians of the Third Reichs final chapter.
