His passion for flying spanned 51 years, having learnt to fly in a De Havilland Tiger Moth in 1956. His career culminated in a Guinness World Record in 2006, as the oldest active commercial pilot, aged 74. He served with distinction as a senior flying officer in the South African Airforce (1976 1998).
