About the Book
This volume marks a pivotal reformulation in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis. Robert Langs introduces the concept of the bipersonal field the dynamic, interactive space between therapist and patient as the true locus of psychological meaning and therapeutic change. Rejecting the one-sided emphasis of classical technique, Langs demonstrates that both participants co-create the analytic situation, consciously and unconsciously.

Drawing on detailed clinical transcripts, the book elucidates key phenomena such as containing functions, metabolisms of projective identification, and therapeutic misalliances. It examines how dreams and unconscious communications often serve as corrective or self-healing responses within the field. Langs argues that therapeutic progress depends on recognizing, validating, and rectifying the unconscious exchanges that define the relationship itself.

Written with exceptional clarity and clinical precision, The Bipersonal Field opened new methodological territory in psychoanalysis moving the focus from the isolated psyche to the intersubjective system of meaning. It remains a foundational work for contemporary relational and communicative approaches in psychotherapy.
