This title documents the churches of Bishop Gray, the first Bishop of Cape Town. The Bishop and his wife arrived in Cape Town in 1848. He was committed to increasing the number of clergy and establishing churches and schools. At his arrival there were only 10 Anglican churches in South Africa. When he died less than 25 years later, the number of churches and chapels had increased to 63. Of the more than 50 churches built between 1848 and the early 1870s, at least 40 were designed by the Bishop's wife, Sophy. Dr Desmond Martin has illustrated 40 of the churches founded by the Bishop and designed by Sophy Gray using a combination of water colours and line drawings together with text to strengthen both the historical and architectural comment on each church. This title will appeal to local and overseas visitors to the Western and Eastern Cape, to conservation-minded residents of the Cape, architects and historians as well as members of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa.
