Two pamphlets (16 pages and 15 pages) authored by the brother of South African writer, Olive Schreiner. Theophilus Schreiner was known for his temperance work and as a supporter of 'native' rights. He campaigned as pro-Rhodes and pro-War during the Anglo-Boer war and was in conflict with his sister over this. In the first pamphlet he argues that 'civilised' men of colour should be allowed to vote but not drink alcohol. The second pamphlet is a response the Conwright Schreiner's (husband of Olive) article on the "native question" that appeared in the Manchester Guardian of 30 October 1900. Conwright's Manchester article claims that all 'natives' were in favour of a Boer run state and in danger of being exploited by the 'mining capitalists'. Theophilus argues that this is wrong and that all 'civilised natives' favour a British run state. 16 pages and 15 pages. 1st Edition. Condition: Good. Binding: Softcover. Tissue repairs to the spine of the wraps of one. Some chips and foxing to the other.
