The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, "Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 Scots) is an infantry battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Prior to March 2006, the Black Watch was a infantry regiment. The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) from 1931 to 2006, and The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) from 1881 to 1931. Part of the Scottish Division, it was the senior regiment of Highlanders."
The essence of "The Black Watch" story is it's imperial service in America, India and Africa. The epic battles against the French in Europe and in the two world wars of the 20th century when thousands of men fought and died in the Black Watch battalions. These are admirably evoked in a fluent, intimate account by Eric Linklater, the distinguished Scottish author who served in the Regiment as a young man. The regiment's less happy episodes are also examined in an even-handed, humane manner. Handsomely produced and illustrated.
