Judge Hammond, father of teenage Claire, marries his daughter's coach, attractive university student Vale Rorke, 25 years his junior. Claire fiercely resents her father's autumn-spring second marriage.
When Claire and Guy Steele, her father's registrar, inadvertently discover that Vale is carrying on an affair with American journalist Jef Broome - with whom Claire had fancied herself in love - the battle is joined between the two young women. It is this conflict which dominates the book, side by side with Vale's efforts to escape from the emotional entanglement which threatens to destroy her home and family and which eventually brings tragedy in its wake.
The story is set in the beautiful Cape Peninsula among the places and people South African Joy Packer knows best.
