Anglo-Boer War. Anglo-Boereoorlog. Numbered 525 of a limited edition, signed by the Director Hans Strydom. In the slipcase as issued, in good condition. The slipcase only have some slight wear. Name of previous owner in front.

Davitt (1846-1906) was born in County Mayo, Ireland. He started work in a factory at nine and his right arm was amputated at eleven after an industrial accident. Unable to work, he had time to attend school and became interested in Irish history. He smuggled arms to Ireland and became active in politics. He was imprisoned and whilst there, was elected an MP. His parliamentary career was turbulent and he resigned his membership of the British House of Commons in October 1899, as a protest against the war he considered to be "the greatest infamy of the nineteenth century" (Preface). He then proceeded to the Transvaal, where, during a stay of several months, he gathered facts and information at first hand through contact with the leaders and burghers of both Republics This book describes those experiences. His role in Irish politics declined in his later years and he was deliberately sidelined by later, more radical, nationalists. Nevertheless his private funeral was attended by over 20 000 of his countrymen. See Mendelssohn, SOUTH AFRICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY, volume 1, page 422.
