Green cloth cover with guilt lettering on the cover and spine. Illustrated frontis page. 184pp with notes + colour illusts (including 10 tipped-in colour plates of Baines's oils). 265mm x 270mm. The essays are: Thomas Baines, traveller, artist & man of enterprise; works of Thomas Baines; Baines' African collections. This book focuses on Baines's first residence in Africa (1842-1853). Howeve it does have 4 watercolours from Gregory's expedition to northern Australia and notes that the Baines's African Collections has 38 works from that series (including the famous alligator at Victoria River 1855).

(John) Thomas Baines (27 November 1820 8 May 1875) was an English artist and explorer of  southern Africa and Australia.
