Brenthurst is a busy place. As well as the running of the private homes and the considerable task of maintaining the gardens, work of many other kinds is done on the estate and it would clearly not be possible to interrupt these activities by permitting completely open access.

However, Bridget and Harry Oppenheimer have always been generous in making it possible to visit the gardens by invitation. I hope this book will add to the enjoyment of visitors, and, through the splendid photography of Dick Scott and Hans van Dyk, bring the beauty of the gardens to those who cannot come themselves. Readers will find that the illustration and commentary in the book are in the form of a tour, roughly following the route on which visitors are likely to see the gardens.
