Title: The British Empire Service League South Africa (BESL) Badge. Manufactured By: Thomas Fattorini, Birmingham. Height: 7.00mm. Width: 25.0mm. Depth: 34.0mm. Info: The Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League was founded in 1921 in Cape Town, South Africa, as the British Empire Services League by Field Marshal Earl Haig and Field Marshal Jan Smuts to link together ex-service organisations from throughout the British Empire. The British Empire Service League (BESL) in South Africa had a distinctive badge, often an enamel lapel pin, that was worn by members. The badge typically featured the BESL logo, often in green and white enamel, within a circular design. Some badges also included the words "South Africa". the badge has the Kings Crown at the top, worn by members of the BESL, who were ex-servicemen and women and those who supported their cause. The BESL in South Africa had its roots in the post-World War I era and aimed to support veterans. The organization later expanded its focus to include veterans of World War II and beyond. The Badge has a stamp number of 1559 on the clasp at the rear. Apparently there are no details available with regards to the badge numbers. The British Empire Sevice League South Africa Badge forms part of the Militaria Collection of Lt Col AD Irvine who served in the Union Defence Force in North Africa and Europe during WW2 and for the South African Air Force.
