Maltsev, a junior sergeant in the Red Army is serving his military service on the frozen Siberian border with China. Despite the outward appearance of communist state unity and trade with the Chinese, a tit for tat war of attrition exists over disputed territories which is every bit as murderous and brutal and full of phoney comradely as life in the army. A fierce patriotism covers a lot of cracks, but many wonder what they're fighting for. For Svezhnev it is an idealistic dream that 'real socialism' rather than the hybrid version they have now will be achieved given both justice and freedom to the masses. For Maltsev, it is the hope of emigrating to the (accidental) land of his birth-France. But where he'll be free to say and read what he likes, will real freedom exist there...
