The Grosvenor ran aground on the treacherous coast of south-east Africa in the 1780s. A number of her crew and passengers, including women and children survived to reach the shore safely. But the castaways found themselves hundreds of miles away from the nearest European outpost, and utterly ignorant of the people amongst whom they found themselves.
