Mann was an intrepid mountaineer and astronomer, who scaled many of the major mountains of the Cape during the 1840's. Gives a glimpse of the conditions in the country and mountainous districts of the western part of the Cape Colony in the 1840s. He had been appointed Second Assistant at the Royal Observatory under Thomas Maclear with the initial task of a survey intended to verify the work of Abbe Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille. A brief biographical review is given.
