Wow, what a find!! The Cape of Good Hope 1652-1833. An account of its buildings and the life of its people By G.E. Pearse ( Signed and dated by Author Prof G.E. Pearse 15.5.57) Book was printed in 1956. Hardcover 166 pages.
This ia another book by Prof Pearse, well known authority on the early architecture of this country and whose first book Eighteenth Century Architecture in South africa is now a rare piece of Africana.
In this work the author has given us the historical background to the buildings illiustrated and has said something about the life and customs of the people who built them. In addition to the flat roofed town houses and the gabled country houses, a number of early nineteenth century buildings, which show the influence of then prevailing Georgian and Regency architecture in England have been included.
In South Africa today there is a growing tendency to reproduce our early historic furniture and the author has selected some of the best examples for illustration. The period covered, 1652 to 1833, is one in which the finest buildings, furniture and craftsmanship were produced at the Cape.
